A peer reviewed study of insect numbers in 63 nature protected areas in Germany shows 75% decline in flying insect biomass over a period of 27 years. This decline appears to be independent of habitat type, while changes in land use and climate cannot explain this decline. This has serious implications for the wider ecosystems and food supplies.
